Photosynthesis

Hello there class!

We are fast approaching summer, and you know what that means?...

PHOTOSYNTHESIS!!!

Don't you love learning about photosynthesis? Well, if you don't you should.  Photosynthesis is responsible for the delicious food you eat and the wonderful air you breathe.  Photosynthesis in a round about sort of way is responsible for you!
 

In this next unit we will explore how energy flows through an ecosystem (Biology standard 1, objective 1), and a large part of that is understanding photosynthesis. 

Watch the presentation below, learn all about photosynthesis, and complete the quiz at the end (Ed tech standard 8).

I hope things are going well for you on this glorious afternoon! I am super excited to start a brand new school year with you. We have so many things to learn and discover!

Hello you wonderful class! 

Today, I have created a list of fun and educational videos from youtube for you to further explore topics we have discussed (or will discuss in class).

There is much knowledge to gained from technological resources, such as youtube.  If you don't fully understand, or would like to explore and topic further I encourage you to use these resources.  They can boost your understand of the subject significantly! (Ed tech standard 8)

Although the internet is a great learning tool, I also want you to understand the dangers that can be found on line.  ALWAYS make sure to ask your parent before you even open an internet web page! They can help you find and explore appropriate websites and information. Here is a video explaining how to surf the internet safely (Ed tech standard 3).

Review of Parts of Speech

Hello Class!

As we are now starting into a new writing project, it is now time to review the basic parts of speech to make up a sentence. 

In order to write incredible stories we must understand how to write complete sentences.  Nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, and pronouns allow us to create beautiful stories that other people can understand and enjoy along with us. 

Watch the video below to review the different parts of speech (3rd grade writing standard 5, Ed. tech standard 8).  We will discuss this further in class tomorrow. 

Brainstorm some ideas for fun stories to write. We will be writing and sharing our awesome stories within the next few weeks.

Exploring Heredity

Heredity is fascinating to study! What traits did you inherit from your mom? What traits did you inherit from your dad? 

As part of the 5th grade curriculum we will explore some of the traits that are passed from parent to child (5th grade science standard 5).  Last week we examined which traits come from which of our parents.  Now we will look at the characteristics of different dog breeds to further understand how traits are passed down from parent to child. 

Click here to view  a mind map about different dog breeds(Characterisitcs of Different Dog Breeds).  Reflect on how the characteristics of different dog breeds is dependent on the parent (Ed tech standard 6).  Think about how mixed breeds are similar and different from their parent. 

Record any thoughts that come to mind in your science notebook so we can discuss them in class on Monday.

Dinosaur Field Trip Flyer

Guess what's happening Tuesday....

That's right, our field trip to the Dinosaur museum in Thanksgiving Point is happening!!!

Are you guys so excited? I know I certainly am! Field Trips serve as a great opportunity to expand our learning beyond what we can learn in a textbook.

As part of the 4th grade curriculum, we are expected to cover the formation of fossils, and we get to discuss the fascinating creatures they come from (4th grade science standard 4).  Through visiting the dinosaur museum we will be able to get an up close look at some of the amazing creatures that used to roam the globe.

Opinion Writing Using Storybird

Hello my beautiful class! 

As you already are well aware, we are working on writing opinion pieces (4th grade writing standard 1). As you will see with the storybird assignment below, writing opinion pieces can be very fun.  

 

For your homework assignment, I would like you to write an opinion piece using the fun pictures provided by storybird (Ed Tech standard 5). 

Your opinion piece can be entirely made up, or it can be true.  The important thing to remember is that your opinion should be well supported by specific facts and details.  See the Storybird presentation below to see an example of what I expect.

Preventing Substance Abuse

As part of the standard core curriculum, we have been learning about healthy ways to cope with stress.  We have also addressed the dangers of substance abuse, and what specific drugs can do to the body (5th grade health standard 2).

At the bottom of the post you will find a series of Animoto presentations (Ed tech standard 6) explaining the physiological effects of substance abuse on the body.  Please watch these presentations tonight and come to class tomorrow prepared to have an in depth discussion about what you have learned.

I know that this can be a sticky subject, if you or your parents have any questions, comments, or concerns don't hesitate to give me a phone call or send an email.  I have created these presentations to demonstrate the destruction that drugs can do to the body.  Pictures can be very powerful in portraying exactly what is happening inside.

February 10-15 Newsletter

Valentine's day is approaching fast! Do you already have a box made for our class party?

We have many fun things in store for the rest of this month. We will be studying multicultural fairy tales (Reading: Literature standard 6, 2nd grade).

 It is important that we understand that stories can be very different when they come from different cultures. I encourage you to visit the local library to find many different examples of multicultural fairy tales. Think about what would cause these differences and similarities.

Exploring Ancient Civilizations

Hello again!

Today we became archaeologists and explored the tomb of King Tut.  For your homework tonight you will be exploring the ancient civilizations among the best archaeologists in the world.

In the Prezi presentation below you will learn all about the Aztecs, but remember... just like any good archaeologist you must first pull out your journal and record your findings.

Archaeologists conclude information about the civilization using the artifacts they find while on their digs.  You are expected to do something very similar.  In your journal, make connections between the culture of the ancient Aztec and your own culture. How are they similar? How are they different? (Social Studies 6th grade standard 1, Ed tech standard 6).

The Importance of Eating Healthy

Hello Class!

As our guest pointed out, good nutrition can have a HUGE impact on almost every aspect of our lives so it is important that we know what we should be eating.  Diabetes and obesity have become a large problem here in the United States, so it is important that we are educated about our health so we can be healthy and happy! (Health Standard 6, 5th grade)

What changes can you make in your diet and exercise habits to become a more healthy person?

Here is a link  to a brochure I have created about healthy eating (Ed Tech Standard 5).  For a special prize tomorrow, print the brochure out, and explain the information to at least one other person.  Have them sign the empty space on the front of the brochure, bring it back to class bright and early tomorrow morning.

Tonight's homework: head outside and get some physical exercise! I am very proud of how hard you have all been working in class. We have also learned the benefits of physical exercise, and the effect it has on stimulating the brain.

I fully expect you to run and play as hard as you can so tomorrow we can fill your brain with all kinds of new, and awesome, information!

Physical Change versus Chemical Change quiz

Hey there class!

As you already know, we have been studying physical change and chemical change (Science standard 1, objective 3). Now we will be taking a quiz to see how much you remember.



Feel free to use your internet resources and watch the video below to recall any material you may have forgotten (ed tech standard 8). You will only have one chance to take this quiz, so make sure you are absolutely certain of your answers before submitting. 

This quiz will be a way for me to see what you are understanding.  Also, it will be a way for me to see what I need to teach better in the future.

The Order of Operations

Hello!

In this link  you will find a Google Doc that is intended to teach the order of operations to our friends who missed class on Friday, and to reinforce that knowledge for all of the students who were in class.

As you may already know, the order of operations will play a large part in future math assignments, and will certainly be covered as a part of the standard 5th grade curriculum on our year end test.

 I encourage you to look back on this document, use the fun acronyms and coloring assignment, should you ever feel hesitant about the correct order, or if you have any further questions.  There are examples on the back if you would like to have some more practice.
